We often don’t give much thought to our central heating system, we expect heat and hot water to be there when we want it. As Autumn approaches and the colder weather starts to creep in, it is imperative that you make sure your boiler is in good working order. Regular servicing of your boiler can help prolong the life of your boiler, keep it working as it should and avoid costly and inconvenient boiler breakdowns.
As a Gas Safe registered engineerin Romsey and Southampton, Tailor-Made Property Services can carry out boiler servicing and boiler power flushing to help ensure your boiler is working effectively and efficiently to help reduce unnecessary boiler breakdowns that leave your home inadequately heated and your family with no hot water.
The majority of boiler breakdowns occur during the cold winter months due to your boiler being inactive over the warmer summer months. Using your boiler more frequently after periods of inactivity can put additional strain on your boiler and central heating system and this is when boiler problems are most likely to occur.
Let’s take a look at some of the most common boiler problems that can cause your boiler to not work efficiently or stop it working altogether.
If you find your boiler is not producing heat or hot water there could be a number of potential causes including broken diaphragms and airlocks, failure of motorised valves or issues with the thermostator low water levels. It is recommended that you enlist the services of a Gas Safe Registered engineer, such as Tailor-Made Property Services, to diagnose the problem and carry out the work needed to get your boiler back up and running.
There are a number of reasons your boiler could be leaking or dripping, identifying where the leak is coming from will help determine what has caused your boiler to leak. It is imperative that you get a registered engineer to carry out the diagnostics and repairs and should not attempt to fix it yourself.
A leaking or dripping boiler can be a sign of a broken internal component such as a pump seal or pressure valve. If the leak is coming from the pressure valve it could due to your boiler pressure being too high. If it is coming from the pump seal then this may have become worn and need replacing.
If you notice leaking or dripping around your pipes or tank, this can be a sign of corrosion or the boiler not being fitted properly. If you notice any leaks or dripping from your boiler you should contact a Gas Safe Registered Engineer to make an appointment for them to come totake a look.
Strange noises coming from your boiler or central heating system can be a sign of several issues such as low water pressure, kettling or issues with the pump. The type of noise can normally give you an indication of the likely problem, such as:
● If it sounds like a kettle whistling, this would indicate your system is kettling (see below for more on kettling).
● A gurgling noise can mean there is air in the pipes or radiators, which may be relieved by bleeding your radiators. Although this can also be associatedwith frozen condensate pipes.
● A knocking noise may be caused due to your pipes not being fitted in the correct position, i.e. too close to floorboards.
● If it sounds like a tapping noise is coming from your pipes or radiators you may have a buildup of limescale or sludge which can be treated with a Powerflush.
If your pilot light goes out it could be a sign that there is a broken thermocouple which is stopping the gas supply, a draught that is blowing the pilot light out or there could be a build up of deposit in the pilot light causing it to go out. A gas engineer will be able to advise on the exact cause and fix the issue for you.
Condensate pipes carry the acidic water causedby waste gas from a condensing boiler to an outside drain. Due to the pipes running outside, they are at risk from freezing in the winter months. If your condensate pipe freezes it can affect how your boiler works and it is always best to contact a registered engineer to diagnose and repair the problem.
When limescale and sludge build up on your boilers heat exchanger you may hear a noise similar to that of a boiling kettle, this is known as kettling. Deposits can affect the flow of water within the heat exchanger, causing the water to overheat, boil and steam which is what causes the sound.
A registered engineer will be able to carry out a Powerflush which will remove the deposits and fix any issues. If left untreated, your boiler will run less efficiently and may even stop working altogether.
